In my twenty years of reporting on authoritarianism in Russia, it’s become clear to me that autocrats like Vladimir Putin often use the same playbook to retain power. Attack the press. Denigrate truth-tellers. Discredit anyone who dares to dissent.

I joined PEN America’s board five years ago because I knew that this playbook wasn’t just limited to Russia or Belarus or China. It can—and has been—deployed anywhere, even here in the U.S.  With your support, we’ve been able to defend a free press in the U.S. and abroad. You’ve helped us uplift truth-tellers, like former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovich and Chinese dissident Xu Zhiyong, both punished for speaking out. You’ve helped us combat disinformation at a time when it seems like Americans are living in different realities.

I know we’ve asked for a lot this season, but I ask you now: will you give to PEN America today?

This fight can be exhausting, yet it can also be exhilarating. There’s never been a more crucial time to defend the basic rights of free expression and free speech.
