John,
We must rebuild our immigration system so that it upholds the humanity of those navigating our complex laws and policies.
But immigration detention degrades the humanity of those placed in it, and it is part of our nation’s epidemic of mass incarceration. The system comes at great cost to families, communities, and taxpayers–and reaps billions of dollars in profit to private prison companies.
That’s why immigration detention must end.

There is another way. The American Immigration Council is prepared to utilize our multifaceted strategies to aggressively:
*
Support
people
so
that
they
can
they
pursue
their
immigration
cases
outside
of
detention
where
they
can
continue
to
care
for
themselves
and
their
families
in
a
healthy
environment.
*
Mobilize
thousands
of
volunteer
lawyers
to
defend
people
who
are
still
detained
in
the
hardest-to-reach
places
of
our
country
and
lift
up
their
voices
to
demand
change.
*
Litigate
in
federal
court
to
challenge
detention
at
its
root—and
hold
the
government
accountable
for
their
inhumane
treatment
of
men,
women
and
children.
The Council has witnessed the failure of immigration detention. Now, it’s time to build a system that is reflective of the welcoming nation America should be.
