Dear John,

With 2020 coming to a close, I think we can now say with certainty: this has been the year from hell. From drought to bushfires to coronavirus, 2020 hasn't been the year that any of us wanted.

For Federal Labor the challenges were immense – we had to be constructive during a global pandemic while holding Scott Morrison to account. We needed to reassure Australians we would not play politics with their lives while ensuring the Morrison approach – announcements without delivery and shifting responsibility to the states – was called out.

Labor always puts the national interest first, and during this pandemic we have done it again – proposing a wage subsidy, pandemic leave and a higher rate of JobSeeker.

Throughout this year I have outlined a positive vision for Australia – a Labor vision – in a series of landmark statements.

I believe that more than ever, Australians need a clear and positive sense of the road ahead, and that is what these statements set out to do.

That’s why, as the year draws to an end, and we look to 2021 and beyond,  I'm sharing these vision statements with you and other true believers.

They tackle critical issues like jobs and the future of work, the health of our democracy, and responding to the challenges – and opportunities – of climate change. They are capped off with this year’s Budget in Reply where I detailed major planks of our platform for the next election – cheaper childcare for working families, a future made in Australia and rewiring the nation to transform us into a renewable energy superpower.

In these statements I have laid out the principles that will guide our party to the next election, and mapped the future we are fighting for together: an Australia where no one is held back, and no one is left behind.

I look forward to campaigning with you in 2021.

Happy New Year.

Anthony
