This year was an unprecedented challenge for working people — especially for those working within the “gig economy.” These are the Uber and Lyft drivers, Instacart shoppers, GrubHub food deliverers — the working people powering the apps that make the lives of their users more convenient — but at what cost?
App-based companies like Uber, Lyft, Instacart, and Grubhub do not provide their workers with benefits or with a living wage. They don’t even pay into state unemployment insurance. All of this is possible because of a loophole in our labor laws that allows these companies to designate workers as independent contractors, rather than as employees. We’re planning massive campaigns next year to fight companies like Uber, Lyft and Grubhub to defend their workers against exploitation – and your support will help make them a reality. |

Taking on these massive corporations will not be easy — especially when they will pay whatever is necessary to avoid having their workers correctly classified and paid a fair wage. Uber, Lyft and others demonstrated this by putting together a $200 million dollar ballot initiative to partially overturn the law. Prop 22 passed in November — and now they're taking this fight to other states. Their goal is clear: codify the legal status of gig economy workers, ensuring they lack the basic protections workers in a myriad other industries enjoy.
