The COVID-19 crisis magnified the disparities communities of color already face. Not only were people forced to jump through unnecessary hoops to make their voices heard, some even had to risk their health and safety to cast their ballot. I’m inspired by the fact that more Americans than ever before voted in spite of these obstacles. — Myrna Pérez, Director, Voting Rights & Elections, Democracy

The Brennan Center’s work is critical and has a direct impact on our elections and our democracy. Right now, we are working on re-enfranchising more than five million people who are locked out of our democracy because of a felony conviction — this disproportionately impacts people of color because of the inequality built into our criminal justice system. — Sean Morales-Doyle, Deputy Director, Voting Rights & Elections, Democracy

COVID-19 necessitated that we expand voting access, and now we must make those changes permanent — vote by mail, early voting, ballot drop off locations, and more. The challenge? Opponents who seek to repeal recent gains and impose even more restrictive measures. We must keep up the fight on all fronts. — Jennifer Weiss-Wolf, Vice President and Fellow Development

We’re engaged in a great fight for the future of American democracy. In 2020, despite the pandemic and voter suppression, the voice of voters was heard. But now Trump’s lies have convinced tens of millions that the election was stolen. We’re looking at a divided, fractured political environment. We face new challenges, but our work is more important than ever. — Michael Waldman, President
