The past year has shone a bright light on the strength of
the human spirit to defy unnerving odds. To take to the streets and demand
justice. To give food, supplies and funds where they’re needed most. To be
allies and advocates, helping others persevere through crisis.

In that generous spirit, a group of supporters has contributed to our
Matching Gift Challenge Fund to encourage others to match their gifts.
[ [link removed] ]Your matching gift to Mercy Corps could help feed, shelter and support
people whose lives have been upended by violence. Take a moment now to

That’s me with the red hat (above) speaking with a group of women in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (the DRC). They’re gathered at a cash
distribution site Mercy Corps set up to help people who had to quickly
flee their homes, as violence escalated in a political conflict.

Wivine, at the far left in this photo, ran from her home after hearing
gunshots in the house next door. Her children were at school and fled
separately. It took a week for them to reunite. And it’s not like escaping
this violence is a one-time affair. Agnes, another woman at the same
distribution event told us, "It’s nearly every day we have to flee. I want
the violence to end."

Stopping political violence and the conditions that create it is a goal we
all share, but we can’t
let people suffer in the meantime. We can’t let people become nameless,
faceless statistics, without hopes and dreams and real, immediate needs.

The Democratic Republic of Congo has the highest number of displaced
people in Africa and is battling a severe hunger crisis. Here are a few of
the ways we’re helping in the DRC — thanks in part to supporters like you:

• Cash. When people who’ve fled violence arrive at a safe location,
Mercy Corps’ mobile emergency units provide cash assistance to help
them buy what they need most. In the last two years, we’ve been able
to provide cash assistance to more than 400,000 people.
• Water. Our mobile emergency units also provide access to safe drinking
water and sanitation facilities, helping stave off dehydration and
protect against deadly diseases like COVID-19 and Ebola — a virus that
is endemic to the DRC.
• Food. Conflict in the DRC is complex, but we know that food insecurity
contributes to tensions. Mercy Corps helps farmers increase their
harvests and works with community leaders and government agencies to
better manage conflicts over access to land and other resources.

In a year that has challenged us on every level, crisis after crisis has
left us wondering ‘what next?’ Climate change, division, injustice,
inequality — these are the defining global challenges of our time. And
solving them means coming together. It means bringing everything we’ve
got: Knowledge. Action. Crucial resources. It means speaking up, standing
up, showing up. Because no matter what we’re facing — in the DRC, Syria,
Indonesia, the United States — what’s next is up to all of us.

world. Please,
complete your year-end gift.

And, remember, thanks to the CARES Act, everyone can claim up to $300 in
charitable donations made this year, whether you itemize your deductions
or not.
