Dear Friend,
As I look back on this year, one of the things I am most proud of is DC JWJ's leadership in the Excluded Worker campaign. It's hard to remember after this long year, but we won $5 million for undocumented residents in the first week of April, only weeks after the pandemic came to DC. We did it in an uncertain time and with unfamiliar organizing tools - fully all digital coalition and campaign building. DC was the first local government to commit relief to undocumented residents. The coalition didn't stop. The dozens of organizations that came together, continued to fight for more money and more people to be covered. We won $9 million more, and we did it by being strong and clear about our values: we maintained a diverse coalition, we demanded that Councilmembers center people in the DC budget, and we refused to divide Excluded Workers into deserving and undeserving.
We won by sticking together, in a multi-lingual, multi-racial intersectional campaign. That's why we created the "Together" button. It celebrates the Excluded Worker campaign and mirrors our #DontExcludeMe #NoMeExcluyas #አታግልሉን online campaign by showing our commitment in English, Spanish, and Amharic.
If you able to give this year, please consider giving to DC Jobs With Justice. Our small organization has a big impact, and brings together thousands of people on critical campaigns to make sure we all make it through this pandemic. Donate now to celebrate the Excluded Workers campaign.
Thank you for all you've done this year - I am looking forward to working with you again in 2021!
In solidarity,
Elizabeth Falcon
