Your gift — which makes 3X the impact today — will help refugee families begin again. I know firsthand, John, because I was one of those refugees.
My story starts in Kabul, Afghanistan, with my son Rehan. (He's in the photo with me, below.)
Like any mother, I would do anything for my son... even if it meant putting myself in danger with the hope that one day I could give him a better life. I became an interpreter for the U.S. Army — one of the most dangerous jobs, especially for a woman, because Taliban fighters threatened everyone who was helping the Americans.
But the job also gave me an opportunity to apply for a refugee visa and leave behind a life of uncertainty and violence for America. In August of 2013, my son and I were resettled in New York with the help of the IRC.
I still smile when I think about being greeted by our IRC caseworker and finding our new apartment filled with all the necessities of home. The IRC also helped with everyday things, like getting a subway card, opening a bank account, and helping to get Rehan enrolled in kindergarten.
My family got a second chance because of the IRC. And now that I work here on the marketing team full-time, I know the IRC can only do that life-changing work because of committed community members like you. |
