Under the guidance of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, we assembled a diverse group of stakeholders that included domestic violence prevention advocates, law enforcement, and gun owners so we could hammer out a bill that could work. We passed the Domestic Violence Relinquishment bill in the New Mexico legislature in 2019.

This success shows what true collaboration between a national group and a state group can look like. From day one the Coalition collaborated with us and were crucial in getting a conversation started about gun violence prevention where there was none.

-Miranda Viscoli, Co-President of New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence

Dear John,

When partners like Miranda and New Mexicans to Prevent Gun Violence succeed in passing laws like the Domestic Violence Relinquishment Bill, it's proof that our Strong Partners strategy is working! Miranda's triumph shows that collaborating with partners deeply embedded in their communities is the means to end our national epidemic of gun violence.

As Director of Policy and Programming at the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), I prioritize supporting and training state-based organizations with policy and advocacy tools because their relationships with local policymakers and advocates make them powerful change agents, driving progress in gun policy.

However, progress doesn't stop with policy and collaboration doesn't end there. Miranda recognized that the communities impacted by gun violence needed a seat at the table, "We saw from day one we needed a multi-pronged approach to preventing gun violence in New Mexico. We recognized that gun violence is a civil rights issue and that we needed to find a way to disrupt the intersection of gun violence and racism. We have a systemic perpetuation of oppression through laws, through policy, and through practices. Our job as I see it is to obliterate that link."

We helped Miranda convene a large, diverse group of stakeholders together to work within the state-wide movement. Working side-by-side, we helped include community feedback in creating policy recommendations and building a framework for lasting change.

We are a coalition of the many. I am committed to expanding partnerships to pass common sense gun laws across the country. I am proud to work every day to facilitate gun violence prevention solutions community-by-community.

But I need your support to help forge this path forward. Strong partners include you! Now is the time to add your voice to the call for this grassroots movement of national change. Please make a gift to join us and fund progress in 2021! [link removed]

Our State Advocacy and Affairs team needs your help to build a broad coalition of diverse partners to create real and lasting change. Will you make a year-end contribution to invest in our nationwide action-plan? [link removed] Your gift will help us engage communities affected by gun violence and provide vital on the ground training to more state partners like Miranda.

These crucial partners are the foundation and the future of the gun violence prevention movement.

Help us lift up their voices to be heard!

Director of Policy and Programming
