Dear John,

This month, we celebrate holidays that bring us together. At the same time, we have been forced to confront a series of heinous antisemitic incidents that seek to heighten divisions. We want to keep you informed about these threats to our communities.

Just days ago, ADL joined law enforcement in helping the North Shore Hebrew Academy High School in New York after a horrific cyberattack on this Jewish day school. Students and parents saw Nazi symbols and vile antisemitic language flash across their screen.

We then hosted a webinar on cyberhate for the community, with ADL experts and FBI special agents, discussing ways parents can protect their family, and how religious institutions can protect their members.

Unfortunately, this was just one incident in a distressing month that also included the following incidents:

- The Anne Frank memorial in Idaho was vandalized with swastikas and neo-Nazi symbols.
- At a Chabad in Kentucky during a Hanukkah candle lighting, a man screamed antisemitic slurs out of his SUV. He then attacked a Chabad member who tried to intervene and ran over his leg. Menorahs were vandalized in Iowa, Massachusetts, California and New Hampshire — in the latter incident, on the Dartmouth campus, unknown perpetrators shot multiple holes in the menorah.
- On a train in Belgium, intruders took over the public address system to threaten to blow up the train unless Jewish passengers got off.
- In Florida, a father and son were confronted by a man screaming antisemitic slurs, threatening “I am going to f---ing kill you, f---ing Jews.” When arrested, he was found to have hunting knives in his pack.
- In Wisconsin, two Jewish judges faced a torrent of antisemitic and misogynistic messages after an election-related ruling.
- In France, four men were arrested after attacking a Jewish family who had been singing Hanukkah songs in their car. The attackers had smashed bottles against the car while shaking it and screaming antisemitic threats.
And need we remind ourselves that one year ago today, a man with a machete burst into the home of a rabbi hosting a Hanukkah celebration in Monsey New York, inflicting injuries that eventually proved fatal to the rabbi.

When is enough, enough?

Antisemitism is one of the oldest and most persistent forms of hatred. It is the canary in the coal mine, serving as a warning that other prejudices in society are not far behind when antisemitism is present. In

a conversation I had on CNN with NAACP CEO Derrick Johnson recently, we talked about disturbing incidents of hate that are targeting the African American community, and how they are coming at the same time as this very visible antisemitic activity.

As we enter a new year, we are all resolved as an ADL community to make sure that we do the utmost to disrupt antisemitism, extremism and all other forms of hate, and to protect our communities both on the ground and online, from those who threaten us.
Thank you,

Jonathan Greenblatt
CEO and National Director

P.S. If you or someone else you know is confronted by antisemitism or extremism, please report it to the appropriate law enforcement institution, and then report it to ADL at
