Dear John,

We think it’s fair to say that 2020 was not the year any of us expected.

COVID has deeply impacted our community. Many have had no way to protect themselves from a deadly virus that disproportionately affects our communities. People lost their source of income. People in jails and prisons hoped and prayed to not be infected. This virus changed how we live our lives and interact with one another.

This summer we participated in the protests for Black lives following the police murders of George Floyd, Mike Ramos, Breonna Taylor, and so many more. Our commitment to grassroots organizing and community building is grounded in our values to build power in our communities, win concrete policy changes, and transform dominant narratives about the immigration enforcement and criminal legal systems.

We know that meaningful solutions can only be accomplished when led by those whose lives have been harmed by the systems of mass incarceration, detention, and deportation. And when people who have been harmed by these systems win, it’s a win for all.

This year, we’ve shown up, fighting and winning COVID relief efforts that benefit all in our community, reimagining public safety by defunding the police and investing in our community, and welcoming in new leadership of directly impacted women of color.

We hope you will continue to show up with us in this important work however you are able to.  One way to do so is to make a donation to keep our work going forward.

Thank you for being a part of this work.

In solidarity,

Annette, Claudia, and the rest of the team at Grassroots Leadership
