Friends,
Thanks to the generosity of so many supporters, our team at the Campaign for Southern Equality was able to make a significant impact for the lived and legal equality of LGBTQ Southerners this year. Here’s a by-the-numbers look at 2020 – take a look, then please consider clicking here to donate what you’re able: ([link removed])
$340,950 in grants through our Southern Equality Fund
We more than quadrupled our grantmaking goal and gave out 80% of this funding through our COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant Program, including 2,350 Emergency Assistance Grants supporting LGBTQ individuals. We also held special grant rounds supporting BIPOC activists and artists.
652 LGBTQ Southerners attended 64 webinars on The Front Porch
This virtual program launched at the outset of the pandemic focused on bringing virtual connection, resources, and entertainment to LGBTQ folks online
15,155 visits to the Trans in the South guide
Thousands of users consulted the guide to identify medical and legal professionals who are trans-affirming across the South. We’re working on a major update to the guide for a spring 2021 release.
2 lawsuits through our Legal Equality Project
One lawsuit led to the end of South Carolina’s anti-LGBTQ curriculum law, and another included CSE as a plaintiff against the Trump Administration’s rollback of trans-inclusive healthcare protections.
8 nights of Southern Equality Studios artistic projections
These projections – centered on racial equity, voting, and LGBTQ history – illuminated buildings in downtown Asheville, NC and were created by a network of local LGBTQ artists
4 Research Reports from our Community Health Program
We broke down the data from our 2019 Southern LGBTQ Health Survey to explore responses about voting behaviors and from folks in Georgia and South Carolina, from Black transgender Southerners.
The realities of LGBTQ life in the South require that we work across many modalities – from litigation to organizing to grassroots grantmaking to public art. All of this work is connected because it is rooted in pushing for full LGBTQ equality, both legal and lived.
Thanks for all that you’ve done to support, share, and amplify this work in the past year. Now, can you help us keep on making an even bigger impact in 2021? Your gift – whether you’re able to contribute $250, $100, or $5 – will make a difference. Donate here. ([link removed])
