I’m writing to you from Savannah, Georgia, where I’m volunteering to get out the vote in the Senate runoffs, but Texas is on my mind. Ever since Republicans seized power in Texas over 20 years ago, a very small handful of cynical elites have effectively been able to keep Texans fighting amongst ourselves while they have enriched themselves. And after decades of blocking common sense policies like universal healthcare, clean energy, and raising the minimum wage, we’re now living with the results.

The pandemic and looming recession are bearing down on working Texans. It’s extremely important that Republicans are held accountable for their opposition to these key policies. That means that we’re going to need to organize - in the cities, in the suburbs, and, as was made obvious in the 2020 election, in the rural areas, more than ever before.

There’s a home-grown Texas campaign called Boot Texas Republicans being led by experienced organizers, bringing people together to take on the corrupt Republican establishment in Texas. They’re building a movement that will work statewide to organize volunteers and voters to win in 2022 - starting now.

Republicans have been too weak to stand up to the extremists in their base, and too compliant to their rich donors, and the result has been a catastrophe. Over 20,000 Texans will never have the chance to be with their families again for the holidays because Texas’ statewide Republican leadership let COVID-19 spread unchecked.

But Democrats also need to take a hard look in the mirror. All politics is national, and for Democrats to win at scale in Texas they will have to show working class Texans - Black, white, and Latino - in word and deed whose side they're on, and that they're fighting for working people.

Boot Texans Republicans will be working with grassroots organizations statewide to call out the corrupt Republican establishment, talk to first-time voters, and organize for candidates who will deliver for working class people in Texas.
