Right now, a lot of companies require workers and consumers to resolve any and all legal disputes in private arbitration. It's not surprising, then, that these quasi-legal forums without a judge or jury rarely lead to justice for victimized workers.
I co-sponsored the FAIR Act because corporate America has rigged the system against middle-class families for too long. 60 million hard-working Americans have signed away their right to sue their employers -- often unknowingly. It's past time we outlaw unfair forced arbitration to ensure victims of sexual harassment, racial discrimination, wage theft, and other workplace injustices are finally able to have their day in court.
And I have good news for you today, John: the FAIR Act passed in the House last week.
Pushing this through the lower chamber was already a feat -- but it looks like there is some much-needed Republican interest in the Senate. Although bipartisanship can seem like a distant memory these days, I'm hopeful that lawmakers will be able to rally around this important step towards empowering our country's workforce.
