I want to share some insights that not all Executive Directors are willing to state publicly.

My hope is that it will help explain why 350 chooses to invest in small-dollar donations – and why we’ve set a very ambitious end of year fundraising goal.

A large part of any Executive Director’s job is fundraising. When figuring out how to fund a non-profit like 350, we have to decide where to focus our energy, between large and small gifts.

But here’s what I’ve learned over the years: the more people-powered our work is, the more effective it is.

That’s why in order to sustain the fight against fossil fuels for the long-haul, we need a grassroots base of supporters who want to be directly invested in this work. It’s one of the best ways we can ensure our stability as a movement, and it makes our work stronger.

It allows us to be flexible and independent — accountable to all of you and this movement.

It gives our staff more time to work on the campaigns that matter, and less time writing grant reports.

It shows the fossil fuel industry that we’re not funded by "special interests," but instead by thousands of people who care enough to chip in their own money to take them down.

But here’s the catch: only 1 in 10 people reading this email will choose to donate. It’s easy to assume that other people will pitch in enough and that your donation isn’t needed.

I’m here to tell you that it is needed, so if you can afford it, please contribute toward our $500,000 end of year fundraising goal today.

Here’s the truth: if we don’t meet this goal, we will need to cut back on our work and we will not be able to hire the staff we need in order to run the campaigns and programs planned for 2021.

It's not going to be easy to hit this goal, and we only have a set amount of time to do it, but your support today will put us in an incredible position to build the movement we need to match the scale of the climate crisis:

Every dollar helps us grow our capacity so our movement can stay flexible, nimble, and in this fight until we’ve won.
