You may already know Bella’s tragic story. This sweet 11-year-old shepherd mix
from New York was strangled with a zip-tie, shoved in a garbage bag, and beaten
with a metal shovel by her trusted caregiver, Michael Gallagher. Bella’s
injuries were so severe, she had to be euthanized.

And yet for this extreme act of violence against a defenseless dog, Gallagher
was sentenced to just four months in county jail.

John, that is not justice. Gallagher committed this
heinous crime in New York, where — like in so many other states — animals are
only protected by a patchwork of weak state laws that aren’t enforced, leaving
them vulnerable to abuse. As the law stands now, Gallagher could’ve received a
longer sentence for taking that metal shovel to someone’s car than he did for
beating Bella.

Animal abuse needs to be taken seriously and abusers should never walk away with
