Dear John,
We have big news to share.
Last week, Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Doug Jones (D-AL) introduced the STANDUP Act in the Senate in partnership with Sandy Hook Promise. We’re so proud of this new legislation and to be doing this work with the support of five additional senators: Sens. Hassan (D-NH), Capito (R-WV), Blumenthal (D-CT), Coons (D-DE) and Cornyn (R-TX).
What is the STANDUP Act? STANDUP stands for Suicide Training and Awareness Nationally Delivered for Universal Prevention and it pushes for EVERY student in grades 6-12 to be trained in suicide prevention EVERY year. We know that about two-thirds of gun deaths are suicides. That’s why Sandy Hook Promise is dedicated to expanding resources to help stop suicide. Preventing suicide is key to our overall mission to stop gun violence before it happens. Youth suicide is far too frequent and on the rise across the country – so we need to take action now to make sure students are trained in suicide prevention.
This is a big step forward, but we can’t stop here. We’ll need overwhelming support to show both the House and Senate that the STANDUP Act is vital. Please click here to send your senators and your representative a message encouraging them to sign on as a co-sponsor of the STANDUP Act.
Now is the time to make change happen. Thank you for helping us push this lifesaving legislation forward.
