There are just six days left to make your 2020 gift! As humanitarians, we’re called upon to help build a better future for us all — a future where everyone can thrive. Your tax-deductible, matching gift to Mercy Corps could do just that: helping put food on the table for school children in Kyrgyzstan, emergency cash in the hands of Venezuelan refugees in Colombia, and providing COVID-19 preventions like clean water and handwashing stations in Somalia. 2020 has been a difficult year for many people. But even in a year marked by a relentless beat of alarming headlines, our team members, partners, supporters and the communities we work with are still finding new possibilities for a brighter future.
In schools throughout Kyrgyzstan, children receive nutritious, hot lunches prepared by Mercy Corps-trained chefs who are dedicated to providing healthy meals for the children.
In Kyrgyzstan, that drive to help has taken the form of nutrition support for the country’s school children, providing vitamin-enriched hot meals that keep kids ready to learn. When we first started this work back in 1994, it was common for these kids to have a single cup of tea as their midday meal. Now, schools report 100% attendance rates and happier, healthier students, quite literally millions of meals later. Your matching gift today could help feed a child in Kyrgyzstan and keep them in school.
Mercy Corps adapted its cash assistance programming in Colombia in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In Colombia, we’re working with refugees who have fled violent conflict and economic collapse in Venezuela. Before COVID-19, these families relied on informal work like selling home-cooked food and items on the street. But when the pandemic hit, that work disappeared, leaving families without a means to provide for themselves. Now, our teams go door-to-door, providing cash and hygiene kits to help these families make it through. Help those displaced by violent conflict survive the most difficult circumstances of their lives. Make your tax deductible, matching gift to Mercy Corps today.
Somalia’s Ministry of Education provided guidelines for the reopening of schools like this one, and with COVID-19 support packages supplied by Mercy Corps, children are back in school.
In Somalia, we’re taking on COVID-19 risk and prevention, helping with infrastructure projects like rehabilitating a school’s water and sanitation systems. We’re also setting up hand-washing stations and providing the supplies necessary to safely reopen schools that shut down in March. Nasro, 15, who attends a recently reopened school says, "Everyone is now aware of the massive risks of COVID-19. Even though it seems to be slowing down, we are keeping our distance as much as possible, extensively washing our hands and wearing masks during class." Your gift is one very important piece of the puzzle that helps make this life-changing work possible — in more than 40 countries around the world. For kids like those in Kyrgyzstan and Somalia who are eager to learn, and families in Colombia whose livelihoods were ripped away by this pandemic, make your matching gift right now. Thank you, Adrienne Karecki, Mercy Corps Chief Development and Marketing Officer
