Dear Supporter,

Over the past year, the ability of South Sudan's government to effectively respond to the COVID-19 crisis has been the subject of significant international concern. For the citizens of South Sudan, the perils of relying on the government's response to a public health crisis were already painfully clear.

For years, pollution from oil fields has contaminated the environment and threatened the health of the population. The Sentry's investigators found that, despite internal reports showing that the government and oil companies knew what was going on, they repeatedly denied responsibility and took no meaningful action.

The crisis around the oil fields further strained the region's brittle healthcare infrastructure, which has suffered from war, corruption, and neglect. Throughout South Sudan's civil war, health workers were the target of violence, and medical supply chains were routinely disrupted. Funds for medical supplies and pharmaceuticals have been diverted into the pockets of politicians and their business partners.

This is what crisis response looks like in a captured state: critical lifesaving resources are hijacked, and those attempting to provide support or assistance are subject to violence and intimidation.

And for years, this dynamic has unfolded largely because those responsible suffered virtually no meaningful consequences-*until now.*

This past year, The Sentry's investigations exposed many of the international actors profiting from the looting of state assets. We unearthed critical evidence and provided it to financial institutions and governments, resulting in tangible consequences for South Sudan's corrupt officials and military commanders. This, in part, helped create the leverage needed to push for South Sudan's leaders to compromise and form a government of national unity, potentially averting a return to full-scale war.

Hope is on the horizon, but we must remain steadfast in our efforts to cut off the illicit financial flows that drive violence, atrocity, and war.

Thank you for your support,
