Weekend Reading

Dear John,

Thank you for being part of our AFSC community! And thanks for all the ways you support our work for peace and justice throughout the year. Together, we helped people worldwide survive this pandemic and rebuild in the aftermath of devastating natural disasters. And, we pushed forward new alternatives for a future where we all have the resources we need to thrive.

Our efforts would not be possible without the generous support of people like you. If you haven’t yet made a tax-deductible donation, please consider a gift before Dec. 31 to help us start the new year strong. Donate today. [link removed]

Here are this week's resources to help you stay informed and support your activism.

Update on our humanitarian response following hurricanes in Guatemala: [link removed] Thanks to your support, AFSC has provided food, clothing, and other essentials to hundreds in Guatemala, writes AFSC’s Luis Paiz Bekker.

Congress funds more warplanes—while our communities still need more relief: [link removed] It was welcome news that Congress passed a coronavirus relief package earlier this week. At the time of this writing, it was unclear whether the president would sign the bill, but even if he does, it still falls short of getting people get the help they need. Sadly, many elected officials continue to prioritize weapons over our communities.

COVID in Kenya: Curfews, conflict, and corruption: [link removed] In the final episode of AFSC’s “Under the Mask” podcast, we talk with AFSC’s Kennedy Akolo, Pauline Kamau, and Kerri Kennedy and journalist Michael Kaloki about how countries like Kenya are promoting repressive laws in this pandemic—and how civil society members see potential for change.

Tell General Mills: Stop manufacturing on stolen land!: [link removed] General Mills manufactures Pillsbury products in an illegal Israeli settlement in the occupied Palestinian territory, contributing to gross human rights abuses and violating international law. Tell the CEO to stop profiting from the occupation and boycott Pillsbury!

Calling for commutations in Michigan: [link removed] As the state begins vaccinating health care staff in prisons and expands testing for incarcerated individuals, the governor can do much more to stem the spread by ensuring more people are considered for release, says AFSC’s Natalie Holbrook (Michigan Radio).

How to talk about defunding the police: [link removed] Although many of us aren’t gathering in person with family and friends this holiday season, we still find ourselves having real—and sometimes difficult—discussions about the role of police in our communities. Here are some tips you can use to guide these conversations and build support for alternatives that create community safety for all.

Caring for each other during COVID-19: [link removed] In this pandemic, your support has helped us stand with communities worldwide to meet immediate needs and keep each other safe. See highlights of the work you have made possible over the past year.

Be well and take care
