Dear Reader,

Injustice, in one form or another, is the subject of nearly every ProPublica story. Exposing abuses of power and breaches of the public trust is at the heart of our mission. We investigate those in charge at every level of leadership, no matter how powerful.

Earlier this month, we published a story about a judge in Ohio who’s been outspoken about his belief that COVID-19 safety measures are unnecessary and overblown. That belief has informed rulings in his own courtroom, where he’s repeatedly accused parents of taking advantage of the pandemic to “mess with” their exes in custody disputes. He’s even gone so far as to forbid children from receiving a COVID-19 test without the court’s prior approval. And indeed, a few months ago he removed two young children from their mother’s custody, and held her in contempt of court. Why? For taking her son to the hospital because of breathing troubles, where he was automatically administered a COVID-19 test.

When we shine a light on unjust behavior like this, we create a more accountable system where change often occurs. This year, our work has spurred resignations, congressional investigations, and much more. From the outgoing Trump administration, to police departments nationwide, to multinational corporations, nothing will stop us from holding those in power to account.

As a ProPublica reader, I know you understand the connection between accountability journalism and democracy. Our readers donate the money that drives our work, and today, I’m asking you to join us with a year-end gift in support of journalism that makes a difference. <[link removed]>

We’ve already heard from close to 6,000 people these last few weeks and we hope to hear from 4,000 more before the end of this year, including you! Make a donation today, and help ProPublica continue our urgent mission to create real-world impact through important journalism.

Thank you, Jill Shepherd Proud ProPublican <[link removed]>
