Friends, With just a week left in the year, this season is usually full of reflection about the previous year, as well as optimism and hope for the year to come. These reflective moments feel immeasurably different as we turn the corner on 2020. Taken in its full breadth, 2020 was immensely challenging for each and every one of us — and for our nation and our global community. The pandemic has created collective health and economic traumas impacting us all in so many different ways. The losses we’ve experienced have been substantial — we’ve lost time with one another, connections with friends and neighbors, and we’ve lost far too many loved ones. But America is a nation of resiliency, compassion, and community. I am reassured by the gifts of generosity, heartfelt devotion, and hopefulness that I see all around me. I’ve been with volunteers who may not have much themselves but give freely of their time. I’ve watched healthcare professionals smile through tears, as they care for those who are ill. And I’ve talked with parents and teachers who know that our children have faced challenges but that they have gained skills in unexpected ways. For all who are celebrating, I wish you a Merry Christmas filled with warmth and happiness on this holiday.
As I reflect on the year and look ahead to the new year, I am thinking of those who’ve sacrificed so much to get our nation closer to the end of this chapter in our history. We acknowledge their sacrifices by cherishing their memories and acts of goodness. — Ghazala Hashmi
