2020: One for the history books

The past year has been all about the restriction of our freedoms and not just to stop the spread of Covid. While many of us have been lucky enough to be confined to our homes to binge on Netflix, human rights activists and journalists have been incarcerated for their work. Our CEO looks back at a year to remember for all the wrong reasons.

Cuba: a turning point for free expression?

Photo: Reynier Leyva Novo

In the middle of the night on 28 November, 32 Cuban artists emerged from a five-hour meeting with officials of the Ministry of Culture. They had called on the Cuban government to refrain from harassing independent artists and to stop treating dissent as a crime. The news of the encounter was shared with a crowd of about 300 artists, writers, actors and filmmakers who had stood outside for more than 12 hours to pressure ministers to open their doors. Nothing like this had ever happened before on the island. Read here about why this is so important.

#JailedNotForgotten: Send your
messages of support

2020 has been a terrible year for the world. Unfortunately, for some human rights activists, free speech supporters and journalists, 2020 is just yet another year they have spent in prison, incarcerated on trumped-up charges for speaking out against the actions of authoritarian regimes. Join our campaign to send them a message to let them know they are not forgotten.

Index on Censorship defends people's freedom to express themselves without fear of harm or persecution. We publish censored writers and artists, monitor and campaign against censorship, and encourage debate.

We rely on donations from readers and supporters. By donating to Index you help us to protect freedom of expression and to support those who are denied that right.
