Today, I’m excited to announce our first 2020 endorsement: Jessica Cisneros for Congress! Cisneros is a 26-year-old immigration lawyer from Laredo, Texas, and she’s running to unseat Representative Henry Cuellar (TX-28), who’s been dubbed “Big Oil’s favorite Democrat.”1
Cuellar represents all that’s wrong with Washington. Even though he calls himself a Democrat, he votes with Trump 69% of the time,2 opposes the Green New Deal, and rakes in campaign contributions from fossil fuel CEOs.3
Jessica Cisneros, on the other hand, is ready to fight for the Green New Deal and isn’t taking a cent of corporate PAC or lobbyist money. As a young person and a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants, Cisneros has seen firsthand the myriad ways politicians like Cuellar have failed the communities they’re supposed to serve. She’s ready to step up and lead on a new path.

Last Friday’s historic climate strikes made it clear: our movement is building people power behind the Green New Deal at a historic pace. Now we’re launching a plan to do the same for our political power and take out fossil fuel-funded Democrats who are fighting against the Green New Deal.
If we can help Jessica pick up momentum early on, we can send a clear message to Democrats across the country: if you want our generation on your side, you’d better reject fossil fuel money and back the Green New Deal.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll work with thousands of Sunrise volunteers will get to work making phone calls, sending texts, fundraising, and knocking doors to get out the vote to push Green New Deal opponents out of office.
But for now, I’m writing to ask that you contribute to her campaign ahead of her critical fundraising deadline next week. How much she can raise over the next few days will determine how much she can scale up her organizing, and if we can help her bring in a record number of small dollar donations, we can strike fear into the hearts of corporate Democrats across the country.
