I’ve been calling for $2,000 stimulus checks a month since April alongside Rep. Tim Ryan. This week, Republicans agreed to a one-time $600 check. Far too low in my opinion, but I was glad to see at least some relief agreed to.
Then last night something big changed. Donald Trump said he supports raising the checks to $2,000. Speaker Pelosi and Minority Leader Schumer agreed.
Now we finally have momentum. Mitch McConnell is the last one standing in the way, and if we can put enough pressure on him to agree, we can pass a bill quickly. I’m joining with several of my colleagues as well as progressive groups in calling for an immediate bipartisan vote on the $2,000 checks.
A one-time payment of $2,000 is still not enough to get us through this mess. Certainly, $600 is not enough either. That’s why I’ve been consistently fighting for monthly payments since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. But, if Donald Trump, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer can all agree to at least a $2,000 one time check, I think we should be able to pass it.
Thanks for taking action today,
Ro Khanna
