Since we last spoke, John, a lot has happened in the stimulus negotiations.
Here’s a quick update: After months of inaction, Senate Republicans finally agreed to pass a bill that would include $600 checks.
But then last night there was a huge surge of momentum for bigger checks from all sides – including from some unexpected characters. Nancy Pelosi came out in support of $2,000 checks. And so did Donald Trump.
We now have a real shot at getting our families substantial relief. Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib prepared an amendment to increase checks from $600 to $2,000. We’re proud to join with them to help get this amendment to a vote.
If Mitch McConnell feels enough pressure to support $2,000 checks, we can pass this amendment and give women, who are especially struggling, a brief sigh of relief.
We know $600 is just not enough to put food on the table for a family, or to assist with child care costs, health care bills, student loans, rent and more. For the nearly 5.8 million women who have lost their jobs since February, $2,000 is the bare minimum.1
We know it’s not a matter of whether our government can afford it. The Pentagon spends $2,000,000,000 a day. It’s a matter of political will.
These survival checks are the only way to provide immediate support to the working people who need it – not billionaires and corporations. Without substantially larger checks, working people are not going to feel relief in their daily lives.
This is our last chance to pass this bill before Congress recesses, and we can think of no better holiday gift than knowing some real relief is on the way.
Yours in the fight,
Rachel Carmona
