News of the world environment

Dear, friend, —

As an Earth Island Journal newsletter reader, you are already familiar with our unique brand of environmental journalism, which is a key resource for anyone eager to help protect our shared planet.

However, there’s another way the Journal is a little bit different from other media. Unlike most newsrooms you might be familiar with, from National Geographic to CNN to your local newspaper, Earth Island Journal is a nonprofit publication.

But what does “nonprofit publication” mean? Well, for starters, it means that we are driven by our mission to inform and educate the public about environmental issues, not profit. It also means donations to our Green Journalism Fund are tax-deductible.

At the Journal, we marshal the facts using the highest standards of journalism — fairness, accuracy, and intellectual rigorousness — to make a passionate argument for defending Earth.

Being mission-driven rather than profit-driven gives us the opportunity to publish our work without a paywall. We also don’t need to clutter our website or the print magazine with ads. Most importantly, being mission-driven gives us the freedom to serve communities, not clicks, and to speak truth to power.

Plus, the Journal is a small operation, so your donation goes a long way in helping us pay the writers and photographers who bring you on-the-ground reports from across the world.

Truth be told, this reporting is more important than ever. The dangers of climate change are complicated by the hollowing out of the news business. Corporate mergers and hedge fund ownership have forced newsrooms to cut thousands of jobs over the past decade, all in the name of profit. Often, environmental coverage is the first to get cut.

This lack of media coverage helps the industries that pollute. A Brown University study found that press releases from climate change deniers get 2x the coverage in the national press than climate activists do. Scientists and activists don’t deserve to have their voices and accomplishments drowned out by the industry-sponsored PR noise machine. At the Journal, we work hard to cut through that noise and bring you stories that inform and inspire.

Our newsroom needs supporters like you now more than ever. Any amount helps, be it $5 or $50 or $250. Though we would love it if you can make a monthly gift of $5 or more.

Won't you join us?

Yes! I'll donate to the Green Journalism Fund today!
Regards,

Maureen Nandini Mitra
