John,
After nine months of blocking COVID relief, Donald Trump announced last night that he was finally ready to support $2,000 survival checks — checks that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ed Markey, Bernie Sanders, Ro Khanna, and countless others have been pushing for for months.
Democrats are ready to vote on this as soon as tomorrow. We have a real and unexpected opportunity to put $2,000 checks in the hands of working families, but we need to raise our voices now.
People can't pay their rent. They can't pay their mortgage. They can't put food on the table. So when we insist on $2,000 per month, that's what we're talking about — it's what people need to survive, especially in communities where people have been neglected.
The currently proposed $600 checks will hardly make a dent, John. $600 is NOT relief to help families get through the most severe economic downturn in a century.
To be completely honest, $2,000 isn't enough, either. But it's definitely a start. We'll need a lot more to survive this pandemic, but we have a real chance to get $2,000 to folks who need the relief right now.
AOC and Rashida Tlaib have an amendment ready to go for $2,000 checks.
Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are on board.
Donald Trump says he's willing to sign it.
The only thing standing in the way for $2,000 in relief are Senate Republicans and Mitch McConnell — and they and all of Congress must hear from us now.
In solidarity,
Team Bowman
