The Storms are already here.
Dianne Morales for NYC Mayor

Friend,

Earlier this month, we were able to leave our homes in shorts. A week ago, we left our homes with boots ready to plow ourselves out of a snow storm. Schools were closed and businesses shuttered. Right here in Hamilton Beach a storm surge combined with snow fall turned the streets into a scene from a movie — city streets that were closer to a freezing lake than a neighborhood. We are in trouble.

Year after year we see storm records and heat records being set. The City Council has already passed the Climate Mobilization Act where emissions caps will be introduced by 2024 and become even stricter in 2030. This is a great first step, but it’s not enough.

The city needs to continue to invest in renewable energy infrastructure, including renovating NYCHA buildings. NYCHA needs more support. Our neighbors went months without gas in some NYCHA buildings during the pandemic. Switching to electric stoves and investing in solar rooftops is one step towards environmental justice. Considering NYCHA buildings are located in areas with higher air pollution that leads to an increased rate of asthma. This is not by accident. This is what happens when politics continues as usual.

We need to prepare our coast lines to prevent flooding and continue investing in a green future, a green future that prioritizes environmental damage to begin repaying the injustices our communities have faced.

In Solidarity,
Climate Preparedness Team
