We have a quick update on the stimulus negotiations.
As you might know, after months of obstruction, congressional Republicans finally agreed to pass a bill that would send out $600 checks.
But just last night there was a surge of new momentum for bigger checks. Nancy Pelosi threw her support behind $2,000 checks. So did Chuck Schumer. And even Donald Trump says he wants $2,000.
The good news is that AOC and Rashida Tlaib already have the amendment drafted! Now, we just need to get it to a vote.
This is big. That’s why we’ve launched a joint petition with more than 23 candidates and groups calling on Congress to act. If Mitch McConnell feels public support for $2,000 checks is too strong to deny, particularly with Georgia and control of the Senate on the line, we might be able to pass this.
Republicans have been blocking aid for months. As unemployment claims piled up and food bank lines grew, they did nothing to help Americans struggling economically in the midst of a global pandemic. Now they have a chance to pass something substantive.
We know $600 is not enough. Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and even Donald Trump are all on board to raise the amount to $2,000. We just need Mitch McConnell to agree to put it to a vote in the Senate.
