In a year, when all of us have been challenged, it is difficult to offer greetings of Merry Christmas with the same enthusiasm of past years.  However, faithful witnesses like Mary always serve as an example to us all.  When the angel appeared to her, scripture tells us that Mary was troubled, but her response, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38) was offered without any hesitation.

On Christmas day in 2018, Pope Francis shared a message which wished for fraternity:  “Fraternity among individuals of every nation and culture. Fraternity among people with different ideas, yet capable of respecting and listening to one another. Fraternity among persons of different religions. Jesus came to reveal the face of God to all those who seek him.”

This year, Pope Francis reminds us “as we cross the threshold into the Christmas Season, Mary invites us to offer our quick and courageous ‘yes,’  no matter the cost.”  We must find ways to serve our neighbors, as so many are struggling without work and worried how they will eat and remain housed.  We know our calling as Catholic Charities and as children of God.  While hope may feel illusive, may we model ourselves after Mary, respond to God’s call and serve all as our sisters and brothers.

From all of us on the CCUSA Social Policy team, we wish you a Merry and blessed Christmas, filled with the hope and joy of Jesus’s birth.
