Throughout the past year, our movement and progressive champions have been fighting for survival checks to be included in every relief package but Republicans have blocked this proposal every step of the way. For months, progressives like Rashida Tlaib, Ed Markey, Ro Khanna, Bernie Sanders, AOC, and more have been demanding $2,000 monthly cash relief for the American people until the end of this pandemic and economic crisis but, earlier this week, Congress passed a final COVID relief package including only a $600 check. This is an entirely inadequate amount and a slap in the face for working people.
Now, after months of ignoring the negotiations to instead have an extended tantrum about the election, Trump has stated that he won't sign this COVID relief bill into law unless it includes the $2,000 checks that our movement has been asking for. His motives are extremely suspect, but we know people need this money right now going into another month of rent and bills, with relief from previous programs running out in a matter of days.
