Brexit Groundhog Day

December 23^rd, 2020
Dear Friends and Supporters
First of all, my team and I wish you all a Very Merry Christmas in these trying times, and we hope you are all able to have some contact with your families, despite the growing list of restrictions and additions to the Tiers announced this afternoon.
Every single day over the past two weeks has felt like the news has been on constant repeat, with endless claims an EU Trade Deal would be imminent, only for these to be dismissed later in the day. This is much the same today, with the EU’s Chief Brexit Negotiator, Michel Barnier, saying this morning that a Deal may be possible by Christmas Eve (i.e. tomorrow) and UK sources coming out saying significant differences remain with a Deal not yet on the table. This is a deadline which is gathering momentum and the EU Commission has told Member States to be on alert for a potential Deal on Christmas Eve morning. There is yet to be any confirmation from the UK side though, and it is reported Prime Minister Boris Johnson will talk on the phone with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, later today.
As with all the other deadlines set in these negotiations, there is little reason to believe there will be any consequence if Christmas Eve comes and goes with no agreement reached! After all, we had another deadline at the start of this week - one which was set by the European Parliament – which demanded a Deal was put in place by Monday of this week, so they had time to scrutinise it. However, as expected, this request like so many others, was ignored, despite the Parliament being the only part of the EU which is directly elected. It is of course very easy for the Commission to ignore the EU Parliament, because there is no legal necessity for the EU Parliament to vote on any Trade Deal for it to come into effect. The EU Council can simply grant a provisional application. It just goes to show - once again - exactly how deluded it is to claim the EU is a democratic organisation.
Before I continue - if Get Britain Out is to carry on with our fight for as long as necessary – we really do need more donations to keep us going, as I am convinced there will still be a fight with the EU to get what we want and need – WITH or WITHOUT a Trade Deal - by the end of the Transition Period at the end of this year.
We really do appreciate the donations we have received from so many of you, but at this vital stage - where everything we have fought for could be lost - donations are becoming less and less. The only way we can keep up the pressure on our Government is if we have the money to pay for my two staff and our very small office.
We are so close now - and the next few days will either MAKE or BREAK BREXIT. We need a REAL BREXIT instead of a Brexit In Name Only (BRINO). I will also say, while others have been packing up their bags and accepting Brexit as done and dusted, my team and myself will not be going ANYWHERE until we see the true Will of the People delivered as was promised by your votes in the EU Referendum way back in June 2016. This means we will continue the fight beyond the end of this year.
As we have seen in the last 4 years, just because we won the EU Referendum vote in 2016, things have not been that simple since then. The massive millions of pounds behind the Remain side have enabled them to constantly finance trying to undermine our position. However, we will not be going anywhere. We Must Not Take Back Control Only to hand it over to self-interested big business.
I do understand not everyone can afford to donate, particularly in these very stressful times, but if you can afford to help, we must keep up the pressure on the Government, or we really may find ourselves with a Brexit In Name Only!

The biggest event of the last week has undoubtedly been the chaos caused at Dover by the decision of French President Emmanuel Macron to block the passage of haulage drivers from the UK into France, supposedly as a result of the new strain of COVID-19 which the UK has identified. While I can understand halting the movement of tourists, as has been the case the world over this year, this decision to effectively blockade the UK port of Dover route to Calais and ban hauliers from leaving the UK, is simply baffling. Many of the stranded drivers are European nationals taking perishable British food back to feed the French at Christmas, means this looks more like an own-goal for President Macron! Let’s hope the French remember his behaviour when it comes to the elections for a new French President in about a year’s time. Perhaps he thinks it is too late to save his Presidency and is instead shooting for a high-profile job in the European Commission after he loses – another reason it is a godsend
we will be fully out of the EU.
There is no evidence these drivers have been spreading the virus as they rarely leave their trucks, carrying their food along with them in their cabs. They are effectively being held hostage by Macron, with few amenities and no idea when they will be permitted to cross the English Channel and return to their families.
What’s more the new strain of the virus supposedly responsible for this ban, has already been identified on the Continent, as well as in other places around the world. Effectively, the UK is being punished for our science and research superiority in identifying the genetic make-up of the virus.
With my even-more cynical hat on, this French blockade is a tool of political manoeuvring by Macron and nothing else. This is an attempt to put pressure on Prime Minister Boris Johnson to accept a ‘Bad Trade Deal’.
Quite frankly, this bizarre situation in Dover must be given a firm and severe response by Boris. The UK MUST NOT BE EFFECTIVELY BLACKMAILED into signing a Bad Deal by Macron and the EU. Our final demands over our sovereignty are far more valuable than the delays which have been forced on the hauliers at the UK/EU border at Dover.
Despite my own belief - and I’m sure you all agree - it seems the UK Government is less keen on standing up for our sovereignty, especially on fishing. On Monday it was revealed the UK had ridiculously made proposals to the EU for up to 40% of UK fish stocks to be controlled by the EU, and in order to even keep control of 60% of the waters we would have to pay for the right through tariffs imposed on UK goods. Despite such a significantly pro-EU compromise being proposed, Michel Barnier quickly rejected the offer, as apparently 40% of our waters are not enough as Barnier wants closer to 80%. How ridiculous. Perhaps Boris should send Barnier a French-English dictionary so he can understand the meanings of key words in our language!
Quite frankly, if both sides are still this far apart after more than 4 years, and there is a total rejection of compromise, why are we continuing with these talks. No Trade Deal is worth being the only sovereign country in the world not to control our own waters. The Prime Minister has said this time and again. It is time he believed what he has said, and it is time he acts on it.
My single biggest concern at the moment is, if Boris and the UK negotiators are willing to sell off our waters so dramatically in their latest proposed compromise, what else has been agreed and hidden behind closed doors in other areas of the negotiations. If we cannot even stand up for our waters and our fish, then there is little hope of a good deal overall. Right now, the only way to get a ‘Good Deal’ is to walk away this week.
I am not filled with hope after so many missed opportunities to walk away. The opportunity to deliver a Real Brexit has not yet been missed. We at Get Britain Out will make sure to keep you up to date with any developments over the next few days. To make sure you get all the latest information as it happens, the best places to follow are our Facebook Page ([link removed]) and our Twitter ([link removed]) . Things are moving very quickly this week so watch out for any urgent updates this evening or in the coming days.
I will say this, do not listen to anyone telling you this is the best deal in history or a total abandonment of Brexit until the full details have been released. Anyone trying to promote a 2,000-page Deal they have not yet had time to read, is simply trying to take you for a fool.
