Hi John,
I want to say right off the bat that the ask in this email is not meant for everyone on our list.
We’re looking to reach the people who are in a position to make a (more) significant donation to Fight for the Future in 2021. Whether that’s $500, $1,000, or $10,000 and whether that’s giving online, mailing a check, donating stock, or giving bitcoin, consider it an investment in the future—our collective future, the future for your kids, or your grandkids.
If that’s you, ask yourself: will the internet and technology be a force for empowerment and liberation in the coming years or will it be a tool for corruption and control? You can be sure that we will fight for it to be a force for good in 2021, and we hope you’ll make a significant donation to fight with us.
(If you’re someone who can’t support us financially, that’s okay. Please know that we love and appreciate you for everything you do to support the fight and we hope you stick with us. These are challenging times for so many people and it’s for this exact reason that we are asking those who can to give more.)
My name is Sarah Roth-Gaudette and I’m Fight for the Future’s Executive Director.
I want to share that even while my team has been responding to the challenges of this year—caring for older family members, having young kids at home, and even getting sick—we have achieved some amazing results. We blocked the EARN IT Act from passing through Congress and protected encryption. We helped pass bans on facial recognition in cities from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine, on college campuses, and even got a federal bill introduced to ban the technology. We fought attacks on Section 230 and defended free speech online. We helped stop the sale of the .ORG domain, got Congress to hold a hearing on Amazon’s surveillance empire, and continued the fight for net neutrality.
We’re gearing up to continue these fights and more in 2021. But as you know, all of this work costs money. We're incredibly lean—we’ve always worked remotely and kept our overhead costs shockingly low. But also, we’re 10 people who accomplish an extraordinary amount together. Because of our size, our team of software engineers, designers, and political strategists can move at lightning speed to achieve a big impact when needed.
Your donation goes to support creating websites, building and operating tools that meet the exact political moment, running tools that make it easy for our supporters to connect to lawmakers offices, and paying for those emails, text messages, and calls.
If you’ve read this far, I bet that you’re a lot like us, and you believe in technology that protects our rights and liberates us. If that is you, please consider increasing the level of your support to Fight for the Future and making a significant contribution to our work. And if you have any questions or want to talk to us about your support, please reply to this email and we’ll be in touch.
Thanks for all you do and all you give,
Sarah, and the whole Fight for the Future team
