In a year that has challenged us on every level, where crisis after crisis has left us wondering ‘what next?’, it’s easy to lose sight of the fact that these challenges have been growing all along. Climate change, division, injustice, inequality — these are the defining global challenges of our time. And solving them means coming together. Because no matter what we’re facing now, what’s next is up to all of us. That’s why I’m excited to share a special opportunity brought to us by a generous group of Mercy Corps supporters. Together, they’ve raised $300,000 towards a Matching Gift Challenge Fund, and we’re inviting people like you to match their gifts. Your matching gift today will help us make twice the difference in the lives of so many people around the world. Here are just a few ways Mercy Corps supporters are helping people thrive, even in the midst of crisis:
Smallholder farmers in Kenya have long relied on predictable rainy seasons to grow crops. Recently, drought conditions followed by a historic swarm of plant-eating locusts have left many Kenyan farmers with wasted plantings, barren fields and little food to eat. Mercy Corps is responding to the urgent locust crisis with text messaging programs farmers can use to share information quickly about approaching swarms, supplementing farmers’ incomes with food and cash assistance, and working with Kenyans to adopt modern irrigation systems. Research shows that solar-powered water pumps can increase farmers’ production 200 to 400 percent, boosting income 200 to 600 percent. Your matching gift could help Mercy Corps support the world’s family farmers as they adapt to climate change, and so much more.
In Gaza, 70 percent of young people lack work. That’s why we focus on technology — to provide training, education and employment opportunities. Mercy Corps launched Gaza Sky Geeks, the region’s first startup accelerator, co-working hub and technology incubator, where more than 2,500 young people have learned to code, develop apps and start their own businesses. Your matching gift to Mercy Corps can help power more innovative projects like Gaza Sky Geeks to help young people build a better tomorrow.
The Mercy Corps community has helped feed, clothe and shelter the many millions of people displaced by the devastating conflict in Syria. More recently, we’ve adapted our aid operations to include COVID‑19 education and prevention, as well as treatment for emotional trauma. Trauma is widespread among refugees, especially among children. We started our Family Superhero program to help refugee family members manage stress, build understanding and learn how to better support each other. The program includes communication and confidence building games families can play together. Your matching gift could help refugee kids recover from trauma, and address the emotional and social needs of families around the world. Please, make your year-end gift today. And, remember, you can claim up to $300 in charitable donations this year, even if you don’t itemize deductions, thanks to the CARES Act. There are just nine days left to make your 2020 gift! Together we can make a difference. Our partners, the communities we work with, and supporters like you make this work possible. Thank you, Craig Redmond Senior Vice President of Mercy Corps Programs
We know you’re hearing a lot from us these days. The reason is simple: Every dollar we raise right now helps the people we work with protect their families and improve their lives.
