Hope Lives Here

I consider myself an activist, but since I’m young and an immigrant, I've often thought that my voice wasn’t heard. That changed when I joined The Center’s ROAR internship program. ROAR is a safe space for youth to speak about issues they’re passionate about and discover how we can take action in our community. It’s been helpful to learn about Black history, the role slavery played in America and how police brutality has affected people’s lives.

We are encouraged to speak to our friends and family about what we’ve learned―and to keep learning so we can continue to be anti-racist. ROAR is playing a huge role in me finding hope because I see people like me in the group: young and motivated. People can make assumptions about young people, but at The Center, the staff and participants understand what we need and take us seriously.

Watch Dennise's Center story

I’ve learned how to talk about racism with my mom in ways that use examples and require her to think empathetically. And now―while she may not understand the issues completely―she is listening, learning and even joined me at a few protests. Thanks to The Center’s virtual counseling and internships, I’ve learned that regardless of my age, gender or immigration status, my voice can be heard. I’m not alone and if we all unite our voices, we are going to change the world for the better.

In solidarity,
Dennise
