In the news business, we often talk about "cycles." Colloquially, these are periods when one topic is driving all of the headlines. Usually, there are busy news cycles: election-time, for example. And slow new cycles: often, the summer. But as it did with every other norm, 2020 obliterated those usual patterns. In the course of what has been a challenging year on many fronts, we here at the Texas Standard have been the bearers of some pretty grim and unsettling news. As a gift to our listeners and, frankly, ourselves, we’ve put together a handful of special programs that we’ll be airing this week and next. On one hand, it’s a chance to do what many of us do as the New Year approaches: reflect on the year that was. On the other, it’s a chance for our staff to do
what we haven’t done much of in 2020: turn our news radars to “off” for a few days and just relax. But let it be known that it actually takes a good deal of work to take a day off – it’s meant pre-producing six shows while also putting together our daily program. That’s a whole staff effort. This week, we’ve tee’d up three special shows: today is our second installment of the best book interviews of the year, Thursday is a look at the year in Texas music, and Friday is our look back on “good” news from 2020. A few selections from these shows are below. We hope you enjoy the holidays – and that you’ll keep your radio, computer, or smart speaker on Texas Standard.

Hi all! My name is Sara. I cover health in Houston, home to the largest medical center in the world. This city churns out some of the nation’s most cutting-edge medical research – but just beyond the Texas Medical Center campus lives the largest uninsured population in the country. I have dedicated my beat to stories about this stark divide and the nuances of health disparities in greater Houston, particularly among uninsured folks, residents of color and the LGBTQ community. This year, I’ve covered how

access to transgender healthcare has expanded because of telemedicine, but many can’t afford it because of job losses this year. I’ve done stories on women’s health and the

impact of delayed breast cancer screenings , which was more likely to affect women of color pre-pandemic. And my most recent story was about the first week’s rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine in Texas and how

rural healthcare workers were excluded from the list. I’m always open to new stories and sources. You can reach me at
