Dear John:

With the downfall of Donald Trump, we are at a pivotal moment in America, and the coming year will say a lot about who we are, what we believe in, and whether we can right the course of our country.

In Democracy in Chains, I revealed how the corporate interests and radical Right leaders who place “economic liberty” above all else—including democracy and the people's health—have waged a decades-long stealth campaign to reverse-engineer America back to the days when the robber barons reigned supreme and rigged the legal and constitutional rules to work in their favor.

Their plan? To suppress majority rule through a multi-prong strategy to misinform the public on critical issues, hamstring unions, erect obstacles to voting, capture the courts, and shackle government powers in order to lock in their power permanently.

The fight to take back our democracy will be a long one, but it starts with unmasking the powerful special interests that have deformed American politics and policy. That’s why the watchdog work of the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) is so vitally important—and why I have joined their board of directors.

As I’ve talked with people across the country, it’s become ever more clear to me that to stop this assault on our democracy we must expose the stealth operations of moneyed interests who, under the guise of “freedom,” are putting the lives and well-being of millions at risk.

Few have done as much as CMD to shine a light into those dark corners. I could never have connected the dots as I did without CMD’s intrepid reporting, and that is why I’m reaching out to you now.

More than 40 Koch operatives served in the Trump administration, and the right-wing influence networks built by the Kochs and other plutocrats have enabled big corporations to capture federal agencies and dominate state governments in order to block climate action, pilfer our nation’s natural resources, crush unions, privatize schools, and preserve institutional racism.

As people seek to wrest the levers of power back from the Corporate Right, those influence networks will release a tsunami of dark money and disinformation to prevent change and block our progress toward economic, social, and environmental justice. And with a 6-3 right-wing majority on the Supreme Court, we need CMD’s prize-winning investigations now more than ever!
