The blizzard of new regulations and policy changes that Trump’s appointees at the Social Security Administration are rushing through before Joe Biden is sworn in is hard to keep track of.

Reps. Katie Porter and Mary Gay Scanlon organized a congressional letter to Trump’s Commissioner of the Social Security Administration, outlining the many dangers of this proposal.¹

In this letter, Reps. Porter & Scanlon outline this arcane change:

There are built in measures to ensure [Administrative Law Judge] impartiality regarding agency decisions; for example, unlike regular agency employees, ALJs do not rely on politically appointed administrators for career advancement, and they enjoy protections from negative personnel actions. The role of the [Administrative Appeals Judge] is different, and the shift in responsibility raises serious cause for concern.

This is one more way that the Trump administration is trying to insert partisanship into programs that exist to serve the whole public.
