We are so excited, John!
Secretary Alex Padilla has been appointed by Governor Newsom to serve in the US Senate as a replacement for another history-making Senator, our very own Kamala Harris.
Padilla’s legacy as Secretary of State will be well served by Assemblymember Dr. Shirley Weber. She’ll be the fourth woman to hold the position and the first ever Black woman to serve as Secretary of State.
The son of Mexican immigrants, Alex Padilla has been fighting for Californians since he was first elected at the age of 26 in the Los Angeles City Council. Padilla will be California’s first Latino Senator and fight for all of us on Capitol Hill. He knows what it means to break barriers, expand opportunities for all and move our country forward.
Dr. Weber is a force to be reckoned with and an ardent advocate for progressive policies on the Assembly floor. Weber understands Californians' needs deeply — she began her political career on the local level as president of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees, chair of the San Diego Citizens’ Equal Opportunity Commission and on the boards of the NAACP and YWCA. Since then, she’s dedicated to expanding opportunities for all of California and fighting for your rights at the ballot box.
Will you sign the congratulations card? We’d love to deliver the well wishes of thousands of Californians to Alex Padilla and Shirley Weber as they dive into these exciting new opportunities.
Thank you,
-California Democrats
