Dear Friends-

I hope that you’re taking some well deserved time off. Some of our teams will still be at work over the holidays on the Georgia runoff and supporting this hard working Biden-Harris team as they continue to build an Administration that looks like America.

Which is why we are still celebrating last week’s great nominee roll out (see below) and we want to thank those of you who are amplifying and lifting them up!

As a reminder, there are still Georgia phone banks going tonight, tomorrow and right after the New Year. It’s especially critical to help keep up the momentum even through this holiday break. So please see if you have yet another hour to join a phone bank (see below schedule). Because our best is yet to come if we win Georgia.

Shout out to Cong. Joaquin Castro, DNC Vice Chair Michael Blake and DNC Latinx Political Director Cynthia Jasso Rotunno who are in tonight’s “Foreign Policy Friends in Ugly Sweaters: Get Out the Vote for Senate Races” phone bank...we love it.

And finally, congratulations to CA Secretary of State Alex Padilla and CA Assemblywoman Shirley Weber on being selected to fill California’s soon to be vacant U.S. Senate seat and Secretary of State post. Secretary Padilla will be the first Latino in the state’s history to serve in this capacity, and Asm. Weber will be the first African-American to serve as California’s secretary of state. Please see below the full statement from DNC Chair Tom Perez.

These are hard fought historic times. Happy Holidays to one and all!

Yours in the Fight,

Mũthoni

Building Back Better

President-elect Biden has stayed true to his commitment to select a diverse cabinet that “looks like America.” The most recent nominees, Rep. Deb Haaland, Gov. Jennifer Granholm, and Michael Regan, who comprise key members of his climate team are a reflection of the qualified and talented team he is putting in place.  Congresswoman Deb Haaland is a stellar nominee for the Department of the Interior who would serve as the country’s first Native American Cabinet secretary.  Two-term Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan, has centered her work on creating clean energy jobs. Current Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Micahel Regan, has a track record of bringing people together from various sectors to advance environmental justice and seek solutions to environmental and climate challenges.

And in great news from our DNC family, I would like to extend a special shout out to the DNC’s very own Michael Kikukawa and Vedant Patel who will be serving on the Biden-Harris Whte House Communications team. They have worked tirelessly during their time here and will be a wonderful addition to that team!

Congresswoman Deb Haaland: Secretary of the Interior

Congresswoman Deb Haaland currently serves as the Representative for the First District of New Mexico in the House of Representatives — one of the first two Native American women elected to the United States Congress. As a single mom and someone who has lived paycheck to paycheck Haaland knows the struggles many families face. A longtime organizer, Haaland has spent her career advocating for the needs of her community. In Congress, she holds leadership positions including the 116th Congress Freshman Class Representative to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee, House Democratic Region VI Whip, and Deputy Whip for the Congressional Progressive Caucus. She is also the Vice Chair of the House Committee on Natural Resources and Vice Chair of the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

Former Governor Jennifer Granholm: Secretary of Energy

Jennifer Granholm served as Michigan’s 47th governor for two terms, and was the first woman to lead the state in its history. During her tenure, she oversaw the statewide response to the Great Recession, working closely with the Obama-Biden Administration to rescue the U.S. auto industry — a feat widely credited with saving one million American jobs. Granholm’s chief focus as governor was on retooling and electrifying the auto industry to prepare it for durable global leadership and in-state job growth; her efforts to diversify the Michigan economy by sparking a new clean energy sector have served as a state and national model for future economic and job growth.

Michael Regan: Environmental Protection Agency Administrator

Michael Regan currently serves as Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality. Bringing a deep understanding of the interconnectedness of the environment, economy, and public health, Secretary Regan conceptualized and operationalized North Carolina’s Executive Order 80 — a landmark effort to address climate change’s impact and transition the state’s energy economy. Regan led the negotiations that resulted in the cleanup of the Cape Fear River, which had been contaminated with dangerous per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS), negotiated and oversaw the largest coal ash cleanup in the United States, and created North Carolina’s first Environmental Justice and Equity Advisory Board to address societal disparities exacerbated by environmental issues during his tenure as Secretary.

Vedant Patel: Assistant Press Secretary

Vedant Patel served as Regional Communications Director on the Biden-Harris Campaign. During President-elect Biden’s primary campaign, Patel served as the Nevada and Western Primary-States Communications Director. Previously, Patel worked as Communications Director to Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Western Regional Press Secretary at the Democratic National Committee, and Communications Director to Congressman Mike Honda. Born in India and raised in California, Patel is a graduate of the University of California-Riverside and the University of Florida. He lives in Washington, DC with his wife.

Michael Kikukawa: Press Assistant

Michael Kikukawa is the Rapid Response Coordinator for the War Room at the Democratic National Committee. He previously served as Communications Associate and Director of LGBTQ Media for the DNC, and as assistant to DNC Chair Tom Perez, CEO Mary Beth Cahill, and Deputy CEO Sam Cornale. In the immediate run-up to the 2018 midterm elections, Kikukawa was Press Assistant for Finkenauer for Congress. Born in Hawai‘i, Kikukawa is a graduate of Harvard University.

DNC on the Appointment of Alex Padilla to the U.S. Senate and Shirley Weber as Secretary of State

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Last month, we made history by electing Kamala Harris as vice president, and I’m proud that California will continue to break barriers by making Alex Padilla its first Latino U.S. Senator and Dr. Shirley Weber its first Black secretary of state. In Alex Padilla and Shirley Weber, the people of California have two true public servants. As secretary of state, Alex fought tirelessly to protect the integrity of our elections and expand access to the ballot. And as a U.S. senator, he will be a fearless champion for working families. The son of immigrants, Secretary Padilla has devoted his life to making things better for his fellow Californians – from the small business owners struggling to make ends meet, to the teachers charged with molding the next generation, to the frontline workers during this pandemic who are risking their lives each and every day. Shirley Weber has also spent decades improving her community. As an assemblywoman and a longtime teacher, Dr. Weber has been a forceful advocate for the quality education every child deserves. And as the daughter of sharecroppers who were once denied the right to vote, Dr. Weber is acutely aware of just how important it is to make sure everyone can make their voice heard in our democracy. She is the perfect choice to lead California and the nation in the fight to protect our elections, expand access to the ballot, and end voter suppression. Governor Newsom has made two terrific decisions, and I can’t wait to see all that Secretary Padilla and Dr. Weber accomplish in the months to come.”
