A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Merry Christmas! As we ready for the holidays, I wish you a safe, restful & joyously festive season. I encourage you to share your time and talents with all those in need in our community. It’s been quite a journey this past year and finally, we can now see the light at the end of the “pandemic tunnel.” The vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are now being distributed by FedEx & UPS to 600 distribution centers in the U.S. I urge you to maintain social distance, mask up and wash up as much as possible. These coming weeks and months will be history-making in the way we battle Covid-19.
In this week’s letter, I’ll highlight some holiday activities from yesteryear. But first, let’s take a look at the LATEST NEWS …
* On the local level, we held a virtual Town Hall last Thursday. During that time, we reviewed several activities going on in the Ville, launched the 501c3 - Northville Community Support Fund (NCSF) to assist our community long-term and had a presentation by the Sustainability Team. We finished with a Q & A session -- if you have any questions from the Town Hall, please call me or just click on the following link to see the meeting:

* All Contributions for the Northville Community Support Fund (NCSF) can be sent to:
NCSF, 41700 Six Mile Road, Northville, MI 48168 …. Once we launch the website in early January, you will be able to donate online … easy and conveniently!
* Gov. Whitmer announced an extension of the partial shutdown this last Friday:
+ What’s Open (12/20 - 1/15): Outdoor gatherings up to 25 people, Retail stores, Childcare, Manufacturing, Construction, Public Transit, Hair Salons, Gyms (individual exercise), Restaurants (outdoor dining/takeout), Professional Sports (no spectators), Parks & Outdoor Recreation, Funerals (25 people), Healthcare, Theaters, bowling centers, “In Person” learning with high schoolers starting 12/21 & college students 1/19.
+ Not Open (12/20 - 1/15): Workplaces where the job can be done from home, indoor dining, trampoline parks, water parks, organized sports (except pro), indoor group fitness. (Michigan.gov)
* On Tuesday (Dec. 15), the U.S. FDA issued an emergency-use authorization (EUA) for the first over-the-counter, fully at-home diagnostic test for COVID-19. (FDA.gov)
* Congressional leaders approved a $900 Billion coronavirus relief deal this week for millions of citizens & small business owners. The bill contains a direct payment to Americans as well as enhanced federal unemployment insurance and SBA support. (CNBC)
* Now that the FDA has given the Covid vaccines of Pfizer and Moderna the green light, the return to normalcy is edging ever-closer. Dr. Anthony Fauci has made a few predictions about when the U.S. would be able to go back to normal (or near-normal). According to Fauci, how swiftly that happens is reliant on how many people get vaccinated. "If we have a smooth vaccination program where everybody steps to the plate quickly, we could get back to some form of normalcy by summer," said Fauci. (BestLife Communications Online)
* Michigan passes a $465 Million COVID-19 relief package which in part, assists small businesses & extends unemployment benefits through April 2021. (Michigan.gov)
* Michigan will be represented in Washington D.C. soon by former Northville resident & former Governor Jennifer Granholm, who’s been nominated to be our next Energy Secretary. (CNN)
* The Downtown Northville Social District has evolved further this winter and is now themed “HEAT IN THE STREETS.” It has certainly come alive with socially distanced open-air dining pods, vendor stands (with chestnuts roasting) and many restaurants transforming into covered outdoor dining areas. Come make a night of it!
* I thank you for the support of our businesses, seniors, youth, Civic Concern, and all you have done for those in the Northville community during a most tumultuous 2020.
* COVID-19 CONFIRMED CASES: Northville has had 143 cases/8 fatalities, Township 1224/38, Michigan 501K/12.1K, Nation 18.1M/322K, Global 77M/1.7M. (CDC)
GATEWAYS TO THE COMMUNITY
One of the true Gateways to our community is our historic downtown environment. Today, I will talk briefly about some of the past holiday traditions. I was told by my grandparents that Henry Ford (who spent his honeymoon here in Northville) hosted holiday square dances in the Ville, and the whole town was traditionally lit up with colorful Christmas lights. There were even stories of all the bells in the churches and the fire department “ringing in” Christmas and the New Year.
Historically, many local support organizations (VFW, American Legion, Womans Club, Rotary, Masons and others) have put together Christmas baskets for those in need in our community. Their efforts represent the true spirit of Northville during this season of giving.
Another Northville tradition has been the annual Christmas Walk, which has been integrated into the Santa Parade we’ve come to love. Over the years, we’ve seen horse & buggy rides, a Christmas trolley, Holiday Home Tours, the Holiday Greens Market, and Candlelight Walks with luminaries lining downtown streets to guide Santa’s sleigh. Also, the Mill Race Village team always gets into the spirit by decorating their Victorian grounds in period-based decorations.
This year’s Christmas in “The Ville” is taking on a new look with the “Heat in the Streets” environment. So, over the next few weeks, slow down, enjoy a stroll through town and through the Mill Race Village. I guarantee you will feel the holiday spirit!
In closing, I encourage you to engage in your own Holiday traditions in the Ville and again, share your time & talents with those in need during these extraordinary times.
Keep that Northville Faith and Mask up, Practice social distancing, and be Safe!
Merry Christmas!
Brian Turnbull
