Statement on the Appointment of Alex Padilla to the United States Senate

ORANGE COUNTY, CA - Hon. Fred M. Whitaker, Chairman of the Republican Party of Orange County, released the following statement:

"Today Governor Newsom announced the appointment of California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to the United States Senate. This appointment is nothing more than the swamp refilling the swamp.

Secretary of State Padilla was recently caught giving a $35 million contract for voter outreach to a firm tied to Joe Biden's presidential campaign. Even his Democrat colleague, State Controller Betty Yee, refused to use taxpayer dollars for such an egregious expense. The Secretary also has no compunction using taxpayer dollars to sue the Republican Party in 2020 for the same ballot collection efforts that he praised Democrats for in 2018. The courts rejected his allegations 3 times, and he dropped the suit only after the press moved on to other demagoguery.

These politically motivated offenses should have not only disqualified any candidate from the appointment but warranted an investigation - instead it sealed the deal for Governor Newsom's decision. Padilla is a not a servant of the people of California, he’s a servant of the hard left lobbying class.

In 2022 voters will have their say on who California's next United States Senator will be. We are confident voters will reject a Los Angeles liberal career politician and Republicans will be ready to offer a commonsense conservative candidate to represent all Californians."
