Jack xxxxxx,
Instead of focusing on ending the pandemic, Governor Greg Abbott just announced he is introducing legislation to take over the Austin police department.
Abbott says that there is supposedly a crime wave in Austin. That's just not true.
In reality, violent crime is down, and ten times as many people have died from COVID in Travis County than have been murdered in Austin this year.
This is a desperate effort by the governor to change the subject when he needs to be focusing on keeping Texans healthy and distributing vaccines.
Can you add your name to our petition telling Abbott to stop attacking Austin's public safety system and focus on ending the pandemic?
Recently Austin has taken steps to fully fund public safety programs that address drug addiction, homelessness, and other root causes of crime, rather than only funding police. Austin has also decriminalized marijuana and elected a slate of public safety reformers to office.
Abbott's 'crime wave' is a fiction he’s using to attack these reforms. If anything, Austin has fewer violent crimes this year than in 2019.
Greg Abbott wants to roll back those changes because he is desperate to distract from his mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic: the biggest failure of leadership in Texas in generations.
Can you help us send a message to Abbott now?
Thanks for helping us push back,
Zack
