AFGE Activist,
OPM remains under attack and must be restored, funded, and empowered consistent with its mission to protect the federal workforce.
OPM is an independent federal agency within the Executive Branch that serves as the government’s chief human resources agency and personnel policy arm, overseeing nearly 2.8 million civilian employees who work for the federal government. OPM manages the government’s merit-based personnel system and provides oversight to federal agencies and corrective measures for those that violate policy. OPM also writes and manages federal employee pay and benefit policy, and it administers health care, retirement, and survivor benefits for nearly nine million current and retired federal workers and their dependents.
Every American who believes government decision-making should be based on facts, not politics, should contact their members of Congress and urge them to protect OPM and preserve its critical role as a safeguard against politicizing the civil service.
While the formal effort to merge OPM with GSA has ended for now, many of OPM’s core functions have already been moved to GSA, OMB, and FAA. They are still being stripped down right now! The Executive Order on Schedule F and the new OPM office that is taking over policy making, not based on merit principles for fair government, but based on politics, is also being stood up right now.
Send a letter to Congress to encourage a bipartisan effort to:
- Protect OPM
- Provide OPM with the funding levels necessary to modernize and gain efficiencies
- Restore policy functions back to the OPM Employee Services Department
- Restore OPM’s functions and funding from GSA, OMB, and FAA
- Refuse to politicize government service
There's no time to waste! The future of OPM depends on us taking action, NOW!
In Solidarity,
AFGE
