With California's own Vice President-elect Kamala Harris heading to the White House this January, I’m proud and honored to announce today that I’m appointing our Secretary of State, Alex Padilla, as United States Senator for the great state of California.
Alex’s story is a classic California story. He was raised by an immigrant family in a community hard hit by violence. His life could have worked out in a lot of different ways, but he worked hard -- he landed himself at MIT, the top ranked engineering school in America, and went on to fight to ensure everyone has their fair share of opportunity.
With Alex’s local government experience, legislative experience, and statewide leadership experience, he will be able to hit the ground running in Washington. I can think of no one better suited for the job.
Some say Alex’s appointment will make history -- he will be the first Latino U.S. Senator from California in our 170 years of statehood. But the Alex Padilla I know is far more interested in changing history -- especially for the working men and women of our state and country.
Alex has passed major legislation fighting climate change, expanding educational opportunity, protecting healthcare, and demanding common-sense gun safety. As Secretary of State, he has shattered all records for voter registration and participation. He has fought back against attacks on our democracy and tirelessly defended voting rights.
Now, Alex will take his experience to Washington, representing the most diverse state in the world’s most diverse democracy.
Alex is a fighter. I know that he will fight for the working families of California hurting from the pandemic. He’s ready to help get our economy back on track and people back to work. That’s the Alex I know, and that’s why I’m so honored to offer him the appointment of United States Senator.
