Dear John,
In July, I announced that I would be stepping down at the end of 2020—on my 10th anniversary—as leader of Equality Federation.
The time has finally come and with it an overwhelming sense of gratitude to all of you.
It has been a great honor to serve in this position for a decade and to have been involved with Equality Federation from its very inception in 1997. Twenty-three years later, this organization and the state-based movement for LGBTQ equality have come a long way.
I have been amazed time and time again by the resilience, grit, and compassion of the state-based leaders doing this work. I am so proud of the work we’ve done together to amplify the power and voices of the states. There have been many victories--passing and defending nondiscrimination laws, defeating anti-transgender laws, increasing LGBTQ civic participation, banning conversion therapy, and lobbying for safer and more inclusive schools. In building a more just and equitable society, our members are working with immigration, criminal justice, and racial justice organizations and working toward ending the HIV epidemic in our lifetimes.
That’s why I leave with overwhelming pride in what we have built together, confidence in the future of the Federation, and gratitude for everything our team, members, and supporters have invested to make our work together a success.
It has been one of the greatest joys of my life to lead the incredible Federation team and work with our dedicated Board of Directors. They are the heart and soul of our work. I am so gratified that our long-term Deputy Director, Fran Hutchins, will succeed me in this role.
It has been a privilege to work with so many of you to strengthen our movement. I am confident I am leaving the Federation stronger than ever, in large part due to your support over many years. I will continue to cheer for the Equality Federation and the state-based movement for LGBTQ equality into the future. I hope you’ll join me.
With gratitude,
Rebecca Isaacs
