Especially true for girls in Kenya in right now.

Dear John, We have all become familiar with disruption this year. Events cancelled, workplaces shut, family gathered via computer screen. But for girls in Kenya, disruption means something else – an increased risk of female genital mutilation.   Schools offer vital protection to girls. They can get information there on what FGM is and how to resist it. They can get support if they feel they are at risk of being ‘cut’. But with schools shut and existing FGM prevention programmes halted throughout the COVID-19 crisis, these girls have been left more at risk than ever.   No girl should ever be cut. No girl should ever have to fear for her safety. But the stark reality is that due to the coronavirus, the UN predicts that an extra 2 million more girls will undergo FGM than would have in a normal year.   Our partner in Kenya, the Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), has reported that not only is the risk of FGM increasing under lockdown, but rates of child marriage and teen pregnancy are rising as well. Schools in Kenya have remained closed due to COVID-19. FIDA worry that when schools reopen, no girls will return.   We’ve seen girls show enormous strength in standing up to authority and resisting traditions that put them at risk. But they shouldn’t have to do this alone. Now is the time to stand with these girls and ensure that they have the support systems in place to help them challenge FGM.   This Christmas, FIDA Kenya are working to build a safer future for girls by: Providing mentors to girls while schools are shut, giving them information on preventing teenage pregnancy as well as tackling FGM and child marriage Teaching girls how to advocate for their rights and become leaders for change in their communities Arranging shelter for girls facing imminent harm while they mediate with the girls’ families Helping girls to access legal advice clinics if they need to go as far as court to protect themselves.   As we enter a new year, help us ensure that young girls do not live in fear.
