Hello,

Yesterday, I voted to pass a second COVID-19 relief package. For months I've been pushing for Congress to pass a comprehensive relief bill to crush this virus. While I'm relieved a deal has finally been reached, it should have never taken this long.

First, let's talk about the legislation itself. There are things the relief package gets right, including extending funding for unemployment benefits, which were set to expire.

The package also includes food and rental assistance, an extended eviction ban, vaccine distribution funds, and support for schools and childcare. There's also additional funding to help our Main Street employers keep the lights on through this economic crisis.

There are also areas where this relief plan falls short. For one, the package does not include aid to state and local governments — who have been on the frontlines of responding to this virus. Although the legislation will include direct payments of $600 per adult and child, this clearly doesn't measure up to the need of the moment for many folks.

Above all else, this relief is overdue. It was never the responsibility of the American people to face this crisis alone. And after barely avoiding a government shutdown, Democrats and Republicans will need to come together again to provide more help in the new year – because the American people deserve it.

I have a sense of urgency about ensuring folks get all the help they need in 2021, which is why I want to hear from you, friend. Please share with me your top priorities for future relief so I know how best to fight for you in the new year.

The safety, health, and well-being of our public remain my top priority. I will continue to work to get Democrats and Republicans to deliver additional relief to those in need.

It's an honor to represent you,

Derek
