Dear John - I’ve got some great news to report! After months of hearing from advocates like you about how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting children in the U.S., Congress passed critical funding that will help alleviate some of the worst of the problems. Thanks to your tireless efforts, we’ve won some significant victories for kids. In the stimulus package, Congress approved $10 billion to ensure that child care centers around the country can keep their doors open so children have a safe place to learn while their parents work. This is a good down payment for the child care industry, which has seen massive job losses and closures due the pandemic. And Head Start received much needed funding to help address new costs to keep kids and staff save from the virus. Congress also increased the benefit amount for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helping ensure that millions of kids around the country will have enough to eat. And they approved $4 billion for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, to help lead the global response to COVID-19. They also passed a funding bill for next year that saw increases for Child Care and Development Block Grants, Preschool Development Grants and Head Start. And thankfully, Congress rejected President Trump’s proposed cuts to life-saving foreign assistance. These victories didn’t just happen. Save the Children Action Network advocates - like you - sent hundreds of thousands of email messages, held scores of virtual meetings with members of Congress and made the case for programs that help kids on social media and in letters to local newspapers. You stepped up in a major way to help kids in this time of crisis. Thank you, John! This is a great way to wrap up 2020, but we can’t stop now. The child care industry needs far more support to keep going into 2021. And Congress did little to help address the impacts of COVID-19 on the most vulnerable children worldwide, such as hunger, violence and loss of education. A donation before the end of the year will help us start the year with the resources we’ll need to keep our voices for kids loud and strong. And, if you donate before midnight on December 31, a generous supporter will TRIPLE your donation – up to $50,000! Thank you again for all you did to help get us to this moment. Wishing you and your family a healthy and happy holiday season. |
